
The Space Analog for the Moon & Mars (SAM) has completed its primary operations under my leadership. This brings to close one of the most incredible journeys of my life, equal parts challenge and reward. I entered the field of human space exploration in 2017 at ASU (SIMOC) and the International Space University. I raised the funds, built the team, and constructed a research facility like no other in the world.
SAM was a leader in bioregeneration for habitation of the Moon and Mars, with innovations, patents, 15 peer-reviewed publications, 30 individuals with 140 total days sealed inside.
We grew to recognize that much of what we develop for human space exploration is directly applicable to sustainable living on Earth. As I often said, “How we will live on Mars tomorrow is how we should be living on Earth today–aware of every breath we take, every drop of water we consume, and cognizant of the source and quality of our food.”
My greatest joy was guiding my team members in building in the real world, with their own hands. We were masters of wood, aluminum, steel, plastic, and silicone applied to the fabrication of a massive, complex pressure vessel. Everyone who worked with me could point to part of SAM and say, “I helped build that!” In a world of 3D printed everything, the art of rapid ideation and hands-on fabrication is dwindling. I cannot emphasize enough the value of learning to sketch, communicate, and build together, side by side.
We were at times awkward, but always a capable team, focused and diligent. Far from perfect, we worked through our difficulties and were stronger for it. We learned about each other through laughter and tears, success and failures, shared food, travel and adventures. I say with confidence that conflict and resolution build confidence more than conflict avoidance or taking everything to HR.
SAM will be with me for a long time to come. I hope that it serves as an inspiration for you too. I’m taking time to regroup, explore, and publish a book of the 298 photo essays about SAM. Perhaps I will join an existing team, or build a new facility to carry forward our work in bioregeneration, medical bay design, and reduced gravity simulation with pressure suits.

Atila Meszaros you truly earned your Masters.
